P32: 1 – 2 – 1 Curricular model for chemistry education for life science students

We have designed and are piloting a revised curricular framework for the first two years of chemistry education for students in the life sciences at Purdue University.  We have developed an integrated 1-2-1 curriculum (general chemistry – two organic courses – biochemistry) that incorporates and emphasizes important biological concepts in every course.  Content covered will be assembled into portable modules, complete with lecture materials, laboratories and validated assessment tools.  The major goal of this curriculum is to set the foundation for student success in the biological sciences and pre-professional programs.  Thus, we decided that it was essential for students to take a capstone biochemistry course with a laboratory immediately following organic chemistry in order to coalesce the concepts and information learned in the first three courses.  To build this curriculum, extensive discussions and cooperation between faculty members was essential to ensure integration and continuity of course material.  Successes and challenges faced in the design, implementation and assessment of these curricular efforts will be discussed.
