P400: REEL environmental research in real-time

Ted Clark (Ohio State University, USA)

An in-class environmental chemistry research project involving the collection and analysis of soil samples from the Greater Columbus, OH area has been used in General Chemistry for several years as part of the Research Experiences to Enhance Learning (REEL) program.  Each spring 150 to 400 students participate as ~4 weeks of traditional laboratory instruction is replaced by labs that promote group work, student decision-making, and authentic research practices (e.g. writing research proposals, performing literature search, using modern instrumentation).  The best-practices identified thus far, however, are being challenged by new logistical constraints, i.e. a dramatic decrease in lab contact-time and the goal of expanding the program to serve 1500 to 2000 students each semester.  This presentation will communicate strategies for conducting meaningful research in “real-time” while preserving core attributes of this novel laboratory experiences.
