P413: Development, implementation, and effects of a peer tutoring center for general chemistry students

Mary Martin, Janice Hall Tomasik (Central Michigan University, USA)

General Chemistry is often a subject students struggle with, and students can be apprehensive to ask instructors for help.  At Central Michigan University, a peer assistance center (PAC) was developed to offer students free general chemistry tutoring during walk-in tutoring hours throughout the week.  The general chemistry courses at CMU do not hold recitation sections, so the PAC is a potentially helpful resource for students.   Peer assistants hired for the center are pre-service science teaching majors who achieved high grades in general chemistry within the past three years.   This talk will discuss the design and workings of PAC, and the qualitative and quantitative evidence for the effectiveness of the center.
