P515: Dissemination of classroom environmental research via a student-produced website

Ted Clark (Ohio State University, USA)

As part of the Research Experiences to Enhance Learning (REEL) program, students in Analytical Chemistry at the Ohio State University have contributed to authentic in-class research projects in the area of Environmental Chemistry.  Over the last 6+ years more than one-thousand students have collected and characterized water samples from rivers, streams, and lakes in the Greater Columbus area.  Communication of results has been accomplished in many ways including traditional norms of scientific discourse (poster sessions and oral presentations) and novel, technology-enhanced ones (student-produced videos, on-line research portfolio).  This presentation will discuss the use of a collaborative class-wide research web-site produced by the students.   The REEL program is a national leader for designing and including authentic in-class research experiences.  This project aims to extend these experiences and increase the authenticity of the dissemination of student results.
