P56: A workshop toward improving student writing in general chemistry

Bradley Kraft (St. John Fisher College, USA)

The practice of writing is both an effective means to improve student learning and an integral part of professional development. In our general chemistry laboratory, We have introduced a workshop for improving student writing and proofreading skills. In the 5th week of the semester, students are provided a sample lab report of past student work that contains various places for improvement and a series of guiding questions to aid students in critiquing each section of the sample lab report. Students work in pairs to answer the questions and proofread the report and then share their thoughts with the class through an open discussion with the instructor for each of the report sections. We have applied this workshop across 12 sections of lab taught by 7 different instructors. This presentation will disclose the logistics of the workshop, the guidelines provided to the students, the workshop itself, outcomes, and other benefits.
