P600: Adopting ACS exams as assessment tools - WITHDRAWN

Michael Nelson (Georgia Perimeter College, USA)

The use of a good assessment tool has been critical for evaluating our institutions progress in teaching chemistry.  Instructors at Georgia Perimeter College have developed and administered in-house assessment exams for Principles of Chemistry, GOB, and Organic Chemistry Courses.  The in-house exams have been very good at assessing students internally from semester to semester; however, a comparison to other schools within the country or even comparison within the state has been virtually impossible.  As a result, the adoption of ACS Exams as assessment tools was considered.  A pilot study was conducted to compare the in-house exams in Principles of Chemistry to ACS Exams covering the same courses.  Recently, several ACS Exams were adopted for the Principles and Organic sequences of classes. The pros and cons associated with using these ACS Exams are presented along with ongoing efforts to make the assessment process at GPC more effective.
