P613: Affective, cognitive, and demographic predictors of academic performance on web-based and standardized assessments in general chemistry

Scott Beckley, Jerry P. Suits (University Northern Colorado, USA)

This study is evaluating factors that influence academic performance in general chemistry students.  In this mixed-methods design, the goal was to develop a predictive model to operationalize academic performance on nationally comparable homework, quiz, and test problems.  Based on previous research and evaluation requirements, the research (a) employs outcomes of interest to chemical educators (e.g., standardized test scores); (b) uses cognitive, affective, learning approaches, prior chemistry knowledge, and  demographic independent variables; (c) uses mixed methods including “stimulated response” during interviews to help with construct validity; and (d) focuses the evaluation on a specific group of students – those taking general chemistry at a mid-sized western U.S., state university.  The reliability of the Revised Study Process Questionnaire (R-SPQ-2F) and the Attitude toward the Subject of Chemistry Inventory Version Two (ASCI-V2) subscales will be evaluated prior to use in the predictive model.  Findings will be discussed at the meeting.
