P642: Impact of POGIL instruction on a two-semester biochemistry course at Geneva College

Process-Oriented Guided-Inquiry Learning (POGIL) has been used in the two-semester biochemistry course at Geneva College since the fall of 2009.  POGIL  instruction replaced the traditional lecture format in this capstone course.  Key elements of the POGIL instruction used here are: 1. students read the text and produce outlines prior to class and, then, 2. students learn through small group activities during class. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of traditional and POGIL teaching methods as measured by the 2007 Biochemistry Exam from the American Chemical Society.  Hence, one initial group of students was taught via the traditional format and then took the Biochemistry Exam.  Subsequent classes were taught using the POGIL approach and likewise have taken this 2007 ACS exam. Results of this study will be presented.
