P657: Making a general chemistry laboratory accessible to visually impaired students

Susan Hendrickson (University of Colorado, USA)

During the fall 2011 semester, a blind student enrolled in my general chemistry lecture and laboratory course.  Working closely with the needs and abilities of this student, modifications ranging from simple and cheap homemade tools to commercially available adaptive equipment were utilized by our general chemistry program to provide a very good laboratory experience.  Our actual lab procedures were not adapted, only the equipment utilized by the student and her sighted assistant were modified.  Our experiences in adapting an existing laboratory program for a visually impaired student will be discussed along with suggestions for other programs needing to make similar accommodations.
