P667: Systematic study of backbonding in the undergraduate laboratory

Wendy Burns (Bellarmine University, USA)

A study of backbonding in the laboratory can be done utilizing molybdenum hexacarbonyl.  The single step reactions available to modify molybdenum hexacarbonyl are numerous and can be altered depending on available chemicals.  A variety of arenes, phosphines, and nitrogen donors will substitute one to three carbonyl ligands.  Each student synthesizes and characterizes a single compound with 1H NMR and IR of the carbonyl region.  Students share data with the rest of the lab, allowing all students to study the connections between ligand substitution and backbonding via IR carbonyl stretching bands.
