Session S67a (Wednesday, 9:30am, CHEM 102)

P732: Student-centered approach to materials science for high school students: The introduction to materials science and nanotechnology summer program

Luis Avila (Columbia University, USA), Elena Bront de Avila (College of New Rochelle, USA), Leonard Fine (Columbia University, USA)

The activities are grouped into two learning blocks: The training-learning block integrates a wide range of teaching strategies, including informal learning, formal (expository) learning, Peer-Led Team Learning (PLTL), Problem-Based Learning (PBL), and incidental learning. The educating-learning block consists of ill structured problems in the form of case studies for which the students prepare a poster that is evaluated in a public poster session.

In the morning sessions the students work on structured experiments.  In the afternoon the students meet with their group mentors to discuss the previous lab session and to get ready for the next day.  The day culminates with a seminar held by guest speakers from academia and industry.

The effectiveness of the program was evaluated qualitatively using a SALG instrument.
