P802: Sustainability and green chemistry in interdisciplinary non-science courses

Loyd Bastin (Widener University, USA)

In order to attain a sustainable world, we must infuse sustainability into the mindset and culture of citizens and scientists.  This is the only way to create a culture of sustainability and change the way we think about our energy use and sources, environmental pollution, industrial processes, etc.  In order to create this sustainable culture, we must revise our curriculum and/or incorporate sustainability into our educational systems.  This talk will discuss efforts to develop interdisciplinary non-science courses that discuss sustainability and green chemistry.  I have designed three courses that discuss sustainability and incorporate green chemistry and engineering into those discussions.  The courses examine the causes and effects of environmental pollution on our world and the role of society in creating sustainable alternatives.  Green chemistry and engineering is presented as a way to approach sustainable alternatives.  In order to educate the general public and future policy makers, we must incorporate sustainability into a student’s general education and into interdisciplinary courses.
