P838: Estimating the SERS enhancement factors of colloidal silver nanoparticles: A laboratory experiment for physical chemistry and nanotechnology courses

Recently, a novel physical chemistry and nanotechnology laboratory experiment was successfully implemented for undergraduate and graduate students at Wright State University. The main experimental goal was to determine the surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS)-based sensing capabilities of widely used colloidal silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). This was accomplished by estimating the analytical (AEF) and surface (SEF) enhancement factors. Rhodamine 6G (R6G) test probe (10^-6 M) was added to the Creighton AgNPs, and Raman, SERS, and fluorescence measurements were performed. Large AEF and SEF were estimated in pre-resonance conditions to 2.3 x 10^5 and 1.6 x 10^2, respectively. This laboratory experiment introduced the fundamentals of SERS spectroscopy to students and helped them develop instrumental and nanotechnology related skills that are essential for the technologically demanding careers of the future. Average pre- and post-lab student evaluations assessed this lab at 8.2 and 8.9, respectively, on a 1-10 scale, with 1 being extremely poor and 10 being excellent. y and nanotechnology laboratory.
