P920: The distribution of macromolecular principles throughout first-year organic chemistry

Joel Shulman (University of Cincinnati, USA)

The Organic Chemistry Supplement to the Guidelines of the ACS Committee on Professional Training suggests that the introductory organic experience include the “synthesis and behavior of macromolecular species, including biomolecules such as proteins and polysaccharides and synthetic polymers.”  Most organic texts leave the discussion of polymer chemistry to a chapter(s) at or near the end of the book.  However, the nature of macromolecular chemistry is such that macromolecular principles can easily be used to illustrate organic structure and reactivity throughout first-year organic.  Doing so can bring the subject alive for all students, including those with a strong life-science interest.  This talk will present examples of how industrial polymer chemistry and biomedical applications of macromolecules can be introduced throughout a first-year organic course.
