W18: POGIL Project Workshop: Classroom Facilitation

Rick Moog, Franklin and Marshall College

Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning (POGIL) is a student-centered, group learning approach to instruction based on research on how students learn best. In a POGIL classroom, students work in teams of 3 or 4 using specially-designed activities that guide them through a learning cycle to develop important concepts. One of the significant challenges of implementing POGIL in classes of any size is the facilitation and management of student groups. This workshop will focus on the improvement of classroom facilitation skills when implementing POGIL or other group learning approaches by participating in or observing a POGIL classroom simulation. Ideas for managing classes of all sizes will be discussed; 3-hour session.

Intended Audience: HS/UG
