W39: Building an Effective One-Semester General Chemistry Course for Engineering Students

Thomas Holme, Iowa State University
Lisa Lockwood, Cengage Publishing
Larry Brown, Texas A&M

This workshop will draw on the experience of the leaders in implementing a new one-semester general chemistry curriculum specifically designed for engineering students. Participants will consider several steps in a process that will help them identify ways that they can accomplish the same thing in their own local environment. Activities will help participants identify:   – stakeholder interests from within the engineering faculty and particularly their curriculum committee; – analysis of chemistry content that is commonly taught in general chemistry to identify places that the coverage can be abbreviated to accommodate a full year course in one semester;  – analysis of aspects of problem solving in chemistry and how to help engineering student learn not only these methods, but how they may be transferred to similar tasks in engineering courses;  – exploration of how assessment methods can motivate engineering students to maintain their interest in learning the chemistry; – an exploration of connections to appropriate laboratory exercises for such a course; 3-hour session.

Intended Audience: HUG
